Life is full of Learning...

I love life.. It is so wonderful and I love that I get to constantly learn something new each day whether it is about myself, work, or relationships. There is never a dull moment, and everything Good in my life comes from God.
Today my boss asked me to come see her on my lunch break and she asked me a simple question about why "we" as a OR count knife blades.. I didn't know the answer except for its a sharp and could accidently be left in the abdomen and I have always counted them. Thats what I was taught too. She explained that that was not the reason why the knife blade(s) get counted and she then explained that the reason why they get counted is so that none go down to soiled utilty...So that basically they all get put into the sharps container.. She then told me that yesterday on my first case which was a neck fusion, that a loaded knife blade got sent down to decontam. I was shocked, I never send loaded knife blades down and I could not figure how this happened. Well to make a long story short I was not originally assigned to that room another tech was and she was sick and wanted to leave so I scrubbed in and relieved her, well she had loaded the blade and put it into the instrument tray which is a very stupid thing to do, and she never told me about it when I relieved her, so I did not know that the knife was in with the insturments and it got sent down. I told my boss that it is just as much my fault as the other scrubs because I did not catch it. Well I was sick about it and then went back to my boss and asked her if she had written me up. She said, " No, of course not." this was just a learning experiance, she just wanted me to be aware of what went on.
Wow.. I started thinking about how I get to be more conscious and also not assume everyone sets up their back table like me.

Wow, what a story! I never even thought about all of the things that go on in a hospital. I have to admit that I do find it kind of exciting all the things you know about and are able to do. I'm glad it all turned out okay.
