An Ah Ha Moment

I get to share this with you all. Today, I went to work and saw that I would be working in the ObGyn room, so I proceeded to get my room set up and the case opened. One of the retractors used during the first case is called a Lonestar. I had never heard of it nor obviously used it. I asked about it and one of the other techs told me not to worry, just hand it to the doctor and they will set it up. So I scrub in and started setting up the case. Dr Eyring is the doctor performing the case and he is very HIGH MAINTENCE. He has very strict and high expectations and a lot of people that I work with do not like working with him because it can be very stressful. I thought what the heck and just go for it. So we start. I hand him the drapes and pass of the suction and bovie (cautery) and we begin. 5 minutes into the case he asks for the Lonestar so I handed the retractor to him and proceded to hand the clips with it. He then turned around and very bluntly infomed me that I was not doing it Correctly. So I said, " I have never used this insturment before, I apologize." and he said, " that is a LAME excuse, for not knowing how to put it together." so I said would you please show me how you would like it done." and he snapped right out of his crappiness and said, sure I would love to show you.
So my Ah Ha, was this. Since I started at my new job in January I have been using the excuse, " I have never done that before, or I don't know how to do that." And that has been my excuse for not knowing how things work or run. I realized it is pretty LAME. (thanks Dr Eyring) So from now on I will just do, and ask for assistance.
It is amazing how easy it is to take the chicken exit out of life and make up excuses, or find some other way out. Instead of just being accountable. How much more easy that is and how much more easy life is when I choose to be accountable.
